Just as with Trousers there are some types of footwear that definitely not suitable for the type of walking done by the Walbottle Ramblers. One of those is illustrated on the left - the training shoe. These very common shoes are soft, provide very little support or protection and are definitely not water or mud proof. Other types of footwear which cannot be worn are fashion shoes or boots of any description
There is absolutely no doubt at all that the most satisfactory foot wear is a pair of stout modern walking boots. Perhaps not the same as that illustrated but a good strong pair of waterproof boots is a must if you wish to get the full value from your Walbottle Ramblers walks. Such boots can be obtained at any of the Outdoor shops They come in various types and prices and it is really up to you which you chose. However the boot must fit properly otherwise blisters will be the inevitable result. The popular idea of buying boots which are too big and then packing the excess space with socks is not to be encouraged. Boots should fit well with only one or, perhaps, two pairs of socks. Having invested in a pair of decent boots it is very important that they are looked after properly. Every manufacturer will provide instructions as to how their particular boot should be looked after. These should be followed in order that you get the maximum amount of wear and consequently value from what will probably be one of your most expensive purchase. A sometimes neglected aspect of footwear is the sock. If blisters are to be avoided then it is essential that decent socks are worn. Again these are easily obtainable from outdoor shops and come in various designs from different manufacturers. Choose one which you think will be suitable for you, making sure the socks fit well, and are not too big.
