WALBOTTLE RAMBLERS

|
The Origins of the Walbottle Ramblers Conceived in the early 1970s as a class in the newly formed Adult Association at Walbottle High School the club has gone from strength to strength. to the present day. Due to the complete re-assessment of the courses being run by the Adult Education the connection with the Local Authority has now been severed. However the principles and standards established in those early days have been retained. Unlike many rambling clubs which use voluntary leaders the Class has always used permanent experienced leaders. The intention was to encourage absolute beginners to join a group that would make no organisational demands. In the early days circular rambles of 7 - 10 miles were offered with appropriate refreshment stops. This circular aspect meant that members could use their own cars to reach the start of the walks and gave them total control over what they did at the end of the walk. As time went by members requested other activities such as bus trips, pub lunch walks, rambling week-ends and purely social events such as an annual dinner . These were provided by the leaders and some are still provided to this day. We are fortunate in this area to have some beautiful countryside on our doorstep. Within a 50 -60 mile radius we have the hills, moors and valleys of Northumberland and Durham, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Border Counties. This our playground. This is the escapism that we offer to our members. |
