WALBOTTLE RAMBLERS

The previous pages have given some idea of the type of clothing and footwear which is recommended. However some items do not fit into a "clothing" bracket. These are included here. A RUCKSACK On the previous pages on this site recommendations have been made as to what is needed on a walk. If a packed lunch, waterproofs and something to drink are the larger items then a large framed pack is not needed. A day pack of about 25 - 35 litres is quite adequate in most cases. As with most outdoor equipment there are numerous manufacturers producing a bewildering variety of designs. It is up to the walker to chose which particular product suits him best. There a few guide points which it might be worth considering. Modern designs often incorporate a waterproof cover. This is a very useful accessory. The length of a pack is also very important for comfort, especially as the pack will be worn for quite quite long periods. In general, ladies require a shorter pack than men and several manufacturers produce ladies packs, and it is worth considering this. The number of outside pockets is also worth taking into consideration. It is useful to place items likely to be required during the day in a readily accessible place and an outside pocket could be it. Unfortunately there has been a tendency lately to eliminate outside pockets from day packs. Some packs also make provision for a waterbottle, such as a Platypus. This can have advantages, and the packs are not usually notably more expensive than those without such a provision. A WATERPROOF COVER It was mentioned above that a waterproof cover included in the design of a day pack was a good feature. However some packs do not incorporate a water proof cover and it is definitely worth buying one of these easily obtainable items. Just ensure that it is appropriate to the size of your pack. HATS AND GLOVES
These are really clothing items but they do not fit into that category very easily, and it is not always necessary to carry both items. However for walks in any season other than High Summer they are definitely recommended equipment. As with most equipment there is plenty to chose from
A WHISTLE AND A TORCH Although the leaders carry both of these items this does not mean that individual walkers are excused. These are essential safety items and every walker should carry one of each. Spare batteries for the torch should also be in the pack. SOMETHING TO SIT ON We always have an extended stop for lunch. So, unless you wish to spend the time standing up (good for the digestion) then you need something to sit on. What it is is entirely up to you. Anything from simple bin bags to Sitzmats and stools can be found amongst the current Ramblers and these are all perfectly acceptable WALKING POLES There is still a certain amount of controversy surrounding these items of equipment. In the end it is the choice of the individual whether to use them or not. Two poles are said to be better than one, and there are a number of types on the market. Those poles containing some design of shock absorber system would appear to be better than other kinds. Also those poles with a ski stick type of handle appear to be better than the walking stick type of handle. Again there is a wide range of prices and types available. SKIN CARE Walking in the hills and the countryside exposes the skin to more sunshine than is normal. It is also possible to encounter insects some of which can bite. Consequently it is recommended that some kind of sun block cream is carried, and an insect repellent especially in the summer. Both of these items can be obtained in the outdoor stores at a reasonable cost. Some people suffer from chapped lips and if this applies to you then the appropriate medication should be taken along. If you are the type of person who has a severe allergic reaction to insect bites then it is also worth carrying an anti-histamine cream or spray as a form of relief from the pain and itching. SUN GLASSES These are only necessary if you have discomfort in bright sunlight. Readily available in any chain store or pharmacy.
